Several militants killed near Kabul
U.S.-led coalition and Afghan forces raided several homes in a district just north of the capital, killing several militants who shot at them, the coalition said yesterday.
The operation in the Tagab Valley of Kapisa province, 65 kilometers northeast of Kabul, targeted a militant leader, a coalition statement said. During the operation, militants fired on the Afghan and U.S. forces from covered defensive positions.
Philippines attack
Communist rebels attacked a government militia outpost yesterday in the northern Philippines, provoking a clash in which three guerrillas were killed, police said.
The rebels stormed the encampment outside the mountain township of Sallapadan, said Abra provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Alexander Pumecha.
About 20 government militiamen resisted the dawn assault, killing three guerrillas, but abandoned the outpost hours later when a larger group of about 100 New People's Army guerrillas attacked, Pumecha said.
Mauled to death
A Japanese zookeeper was mauled to death by a tiger yesterday while he was cleaning the animal's cage, police said.
Atsushi Ito was attacked by the 150-kilogram male tiger at the Kyoto City Zoo in western Japan. A female visitor to the zoo found Ito lying bleeding in the cage.
"The tiger bit him on the neck, face and head," said Toshiomi Ootaguro, a Kyoto police official.
"He was cleaning the cage. After the attack, he was rushed to hospital, but he was already in cardiac arrest," Ootaguro said.
Thong bandits
Police in a Colorado town say they've caught two "thong bandits" who used women's underwear to disguise themselves during a convenience store robbery.
Nineteen-year-old Joaquin Rico turned himself in Friday, two days after 24-year-old alleged accomplice Joseph R. Espinoza turned himself in.
A surveillance video released last week by police in Arvada, Colorado, shows two unarmed men inside the convenience store. They stole an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes in the May 16 robbery.
