Phelps records best time of 2008
Michael Phelps swam the world's fastest 100-meter butterfly of the year on Friday and he thought he could have done even better.
Phelps finished in 51.04 seconds at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational, beating world record-holder Ian Crocker's previous 2008 best of 51.32, which Crocker recorded in Austin, Texas, in March.
"I really wanted to break 51 in the 100 fly, but my finish kind of wasn't too good," Phelps said. "I kind of kissed the wall. It's really not how you're supposed to finish. Hopefully it's something I can work on in the next two weeks."
Mayweather retires
Floyd Mayweather jnr, considered by many the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing, announced his retirement on Friday.
"I have decided to permanently retire from boxing," Mayweather said in a statement. "This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child.
"However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport."
Venezuela win
Venezuela claimed their first ever victory over Brazil Friday when they shocked the South American football power 2-0 in a friendly international match.
Giancarlo Maldonado, who plays for Atlante of Mexico, opened the scoring in the sixth minute, and Ronald Vargas made it 2-0 for Venezuela in the 44th.
Venezuela had never beaten Brazil in 17 previous encounters at the national level.
This duel, played before a crowd of 54,045 fans at Gilette Stadium, was part of both teams' preparation for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Bonds trial
US baseball all-time home run king Barry Bonds pleaded not guilty here Friday to 15 felony charges of lying to a federal grand jury when denying he used performance-enhancing drugs.
Bonds had pleaded innocent to similar charges filed last December, but the judge in the case ordered prosecutors to rewrite the indictment, which made no new allegations when retooled but split out each individual perjury accusation.
