Report: Chancellor Angela Merkel says German triumph possible at Euro 2008 but not assured

Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned the German public against believing the national team will definitely win the European Championship for its first major tournament victory in 12 years.
Germany is chasing its fourth European title _ and first since 1996 _ with confidence high after finishing third at the 2006 World Cup on home soil.
"(The title) is certainly within the realm of the possible, in my estimation," Merkel said in Saturday's editions of Sueddeutsche Zeitung. "But I warn against viewing that as a matter of course. Among our group opponents, Poland was hard work at the World Cup and I wouldn't underestimate Croatia either.
"Then there is Italy, Portugal, France _ and one also must not underestimate Russia."
Merkel, who was Germany's most prominent fan at the last World Cup, said she would watch the team's final Euro 2008 group match, against Austria in Vienna, with Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer.
"I have told the team that I would like to come back again in the course of the European Championship," Merkel said.
Germany's mass-circulation Bild daily was already predicting triumph for coach Joachim Loew's team. Its front page Saturday featured a photo montage of captain Michael Ballack holding the trophy.
"Dear opponents! Just look, don't touch," the headline read. "This is for us."
