North Korea downs Turkmenistan 1-0 in World Cup qualifier

A second-half strike from Choe Kum Chol gave North Korea a 1-0 home win over Turkmenistan in their 2010 World Cup qualifier Saturday, putting the team top of Group Three.
The victory in Pyongyang gives the host, still to concede a goal in the group, eight points from four games, three more than South Korea which was scheduled to face Jordan later Saturday. Jordan is third with four points.
Turkmenistan stay rooted to the bottom of the group with a solitary point. The top two from each group progress to the final round of qualification.
With North Korea and Turkmenistan having scored just one goal between them in the previous matches, it came as no surprise to fans in the Kim Il Sung Stadium that chances were few and far between.
North Korea controlled much of the game against the Central Asian team but struggled to break down the resolute defense.
Hong Yong Jo went close early in the second half but his low shot was well-saved by Bayramniyaz Berdiyev in the Turkmen goal.
With the game heading toward a goalless stalemate, Choe fired home with 19 minutes remaining to put the North Koreans in sight of a place in the final round of qualification.
The two teams met five days previously in the Turkmen capital of Asgahbat and played out a goalless draw.
In the penultimate matchday on June 14, North Korea will host Jordan while Turkmenistan will be at home against South Korea.
The final round of matches takes place on June 22 when South and North Korea meet in Seoul and Jordan hosts Turkmenistan.
