Pakistan frees 7 militants under peace agreement

A Pakistani official says authorities have freed seven militants as part of a peace accord covering part of the country's troubled northwest.
Wajid Ali Shah, a minister in the government of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, said the first batch of militants was released from a jail in the Swat valley on Saturday.
The government has promised to release an undisclosed number of people detained in an army operation against followers of a pro-Taliban cleric who briefly seized control of part of the valley last year.
Western officials worry that peace talks between the government and militants across the northwest will allow hard-liners to carry out more attacks in neighboring Afghanistan.
