Former boxing champ Thomas "Hitman" Hearns facing liens for unpaid federal income taxes

Former boxing champ Thomas "Hitman" Hearns owes the federal government more than a quarter-million dollars in unpaid income taxes.
The Detroit News reported on Friday on its Web site that liens filed in Oakland County state that Hearns and wife Renee owe nearly $268,000 (euro172,000) in federal taxes from 2004-06.
Attorney Michael J. Smith told the newspaper that the 49-year-old Hearns disputes the debt and is working with the Internal Revenue Service to resolve it.
The seven-time world champion is from Detroit and lives in Southfield.
Hearns held WBA, WBC, WBU and IBO titles ranging from the welterweight to cruiserweight divisions from 1980 to 1999. His three-round loss to Marvin Hagler for the middleweight title in 1985 is generally considered one of the best bouts in boxing history.
