Taiwan will not host any events in 2008 Olympics

None of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games events will be held in Taiwan, Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Liu Te-shun said yesterday.

Liu said that according to the National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, all events in the 2008 Olympics Games will be taken place in Beijing except sailing and equestrian, which will be held in Qingdao and Hong Kong respectively.

In relation to whether the Olympic Torch relay will pass through the island, Liu said that China has recently submitted their proposal to the International Olympic Committee and that both the MAC and the NCPFS are keeping their eyes on the issue.

Taiwan insists that all IOC members are entitled to equal rights and responsibilities and hopes that Taiwan's sovereignty will not be degraded.

MAC Chairman Joseph Wu said earlier last week that Taiwan would consider allowing the China to include the island in the relay under the condition that China does not make Taiwan as part of the domestic route.

“For example, the torch cannot be passed to Taiwan from a Chinese city and then relayed back to Mainland China,”Wu explained.

Liu noted that the NCPFS said it would consult related organizations to gain deeper understanding of China' actual preparatory measures on hosting the 2008 Olympics Games to ensure Taiwan's overall interest.
