Bulgaria's interior minister resigns after 2 police officials arrested for alleged crime links

Bulgaria's interior minister resigned on Sunday, saying he was taking responsibility for hiring police officials who have since been arrested for alleged links with crime.
Petkov said Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev had accepted his resignation. It was not immediately clear who would take his place.
"I take the responsibility for certain personnel decisions in the Interior Ministry by which I have misled the government," Petkov said at a news conference.
Petkov had been under pressure to step down after two top police officials were arrested last month on charges of abuse of power and revealing state secrets to crime bosses.
His ministry has also been criticized for failing to root out corruption and curb organized crime. Last week a businessman and an author who wrote about the criminal underworld were killed separately in Sofia.
The coalition government survived a parliamentary no-confidence vote on Friday, though the prime minister vowed after that Cabinet changes would be made.
Bulgaria, which joined the European Union in 2007, could face sanctions if the European Commission's mid-2008 report on the country's progress in fighting corruption and organized crime is negative.
