Bernanke: regulators must move ahead to prevent next financial crisis

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is urging regulators to move ahead on ways to prevent a future financial crisis from occurring.
Bernanke's call comes as officials battle a mortgage and credit crisis that threatens to plunge the country into a deep recession.
In a speech in Richmond, Virginia, on Thursday, Bernanke says the U.S. does not have the "luxury" of waiting for markets to stabilize before planning ahead.
Last month Bernanke, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and other top economic policymakers called for stricter regulation of mortgage lenders as part of a broad effort to prevent a repeat of the credit and financial problems that have damaged the economy.
