IDB unveils plan to boost flat panel makers capacity

The Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs unveiled a three-year NT$1.5 billion (US$47 million) plan in early January to augment Taiwan's manufacturing capacity of flat panel displays and components, the Economic Daily News reported Monday.

The project is aimed at cutting the production cost of the country's flat panel products while reducing its heavy dependence on imported materials, the Chinese-language daily said.

The news report cited the bureau's statistics as showing that while Taiwan has a huge market for liquid crystal monitors and other flat panel displays and peripheral products, local makers produced only NT$2 billion (US$62 million), or 10 percent, of the flat panel product components in 2005, lower than the 40 percent of Japan and South Korea.

The government-backed plan will fund over 120 local manufacturers to acquire more flat panel manufacturing equipment from the start of this year to 2008 so as to boost the production capacity for the displays and its components, the daily reported.
