Ammunition shortage may trigger Olympic boycott by Indian shooters

India's shooting association has threatened to boycott the Beijing Olympics if a dispute over supply of ammunition for training is not resolved.
National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) secretary Baljit Sethi said Friday that an ammunition shortage was hindering training of shooters who are considered India's best hopes of winning an Olympic medal this year.
The federal sports ministry used to supply ammunition to the shooting association until recently, but has now directed the NRAI to import it directly.
"The shooters have been treated shabbily," Sethi said.
"The damage has already been done, I wonder if it would be worthwhile sending the shooters to the Olympics."
India's lone medal _ a silver _ at the 2004 Olympics came through trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore, who again features among the medal aspirants for Beijing.
Rathore's silver was the best Olympic finish for India other than the eight gold medals in men's field hockey that it dominated for several decades.
