Suicides among teenagers have increased dramatically in Taiwan according to the Department of Health.
Teen suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds.
The top three causes of death in teenagers are accidents, suicides and cancer, according to the DOH.
The Ministry of Education said 91 teenagers committed suicide between January and November last year while 70 teens killed themselves in 2004.
But the everyone should be aware that the rate has been going up every year, the The National Youth Commission added.
According to the World Health Organization, melancholia, AIDS and cancer are the three main diseases in the 21st century.
The NYC believes that the teen suicide rate is increasing in Taiwan due to the prevalence of melancholia.
According to the MOE, nine percent of junior and senior high school students are plagued by melancholia and girls tend to become depressed more easily than boys while students in northern Taiwan are more depressed than those in southern Taiwan.
The NYC yesterday stressed that protecting teens from melancholia and helping them to overcome depression are the most important things schools and the government can do to prevent teens from committing suicide.
