Bayliss wins 1st Superbikes race at Phillip Island

Australian Troy Bayliss extended his lead in the 2008 world Superbikes championship by cruising to victory in Sunday's first race of the Australian round at Phillip Island.
Bayliss, who will retire at the end of this season, notched his fifth Superbikes win at the island track by a comfortable 4.2 seconds from compatriot Troy Corser. Bayliss' Ducati teammate, Michel Fabrizio was third, riding with a suspected broken ankle following a crash at the start.
Fabrizio narrowly escaped serious injury when he stalled his bike on the front row of the grid and was hit from behind by the Kawasaki of fellow Italian Vittorio Iannuzzo and the Yamaha of David Checa.
Fabrizio's right boot was torn from his foot and tossed high in the air during the incident and the rear tire was ripped from its wheel. He was treated in pit lane but insisted on taking part in the restarted race, with the aid of painkillers.
Iannuzzo suffered a broken left wrist and was taken to hospital in Melbourne for treatment.
Moments after the start-line crash, Australian Russell Holland on a Honda ploughed into the back of Carlos Checa but both riders escaped serious injury. The red flag was immediately brought out while debris was cleared from the track for a restart.
A second race was scheduled later Sunday.
