Russian singer Artur Eizen dies
Russian opera singer Artur Eizen, an "outstanding bass and magnificent actor" at the Bolshoi Theater for 46 years, has died in his native Moscow at age 80, the Bolshoi said on its Web site.
Eizen established his reputation in 1956, singing the role of Don Basilio in a Bolshoi production of Rossini's opera "The Barber of Seville."
His large repertoire also included such roles as Don Bartolo in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," Prince Bolkonsky in Prokofiev's "War and Peace" and Ivan Khovansky in Mussorgsky's "Khovanshchina."
The singer also had an active concert career, with a fondness for chamber music, and he debuted the works of many Soviet composers, including Georgy Sviridov and Dmitry Kabalevsky, the Bolshoi said.
Eizen concluded his career at the Bolshoi in 2002.
New opera house
After a spirited debate over yellowing marble and mounting costs, Norway is almost ready to open the Oslo opera house, a new cultural landmark whose clean, simple lines have transformed the city skyline.
Architectural and opera buffs are hailing it as one of the biggest and most important new buildings in Norway since the Nidarosdomen cathedral in Trondheim was completed around 1300.
The opera is preparing for opening night on April 12, when 1,300 guests will be treated to scenes from a variety of operas. Opera chief Bjoern Simensen said it would be Norway's "biggest social event since the Lillehammer Olympic Games in 1994."
Record art sale
Ilya Kabakov's 1982 painting, "Beetle," sold for 2.93 million British pounds (US$5.84 million) last night at Phillips de Pury & Co. in London, setting an auction record for Russian postwar art.
The 2.3 meter-by-1.5 meter wood panel, showing a beetle on a leaf in enamel paint, had a top presale estimate of 1.8 million pounds and came from a European collection of Soviet non-conformist art.
The lot went to Pilar Ordovas, head of postwar and contemporary art at Christie's International, according to people at the sale. Ordovas was not available to say whether she bid on behalf of a client.
