Spanish court rules against delaying soccer federation elections despite FIFA threat

The Spanish soccer federation's bid to delay its elections was rejected by a court on Friday, almost two weeks after FIFA threatened to suspend the country for government interference.
The Spanish government has ordered all national sporting federations that qualified for the Beijing Olympics to hold elections before the games start in August.
On Feb. 17, FIFA warned that Spain's national team and its clubs risked being banned from international competitions unless the federation pushed back its March 31 election date to autumn. FIFA wants the Spanish federation to serve out its full mandate.
Soccer's world governing body suspended Greece in 2006 because it said a national law interfered in the affairs of its soccer federation. Albania is also under threat of suspension for similar reasons.
