Thai government transfers national police chief

Thailand's new government announced Friday it was transferring the national police chief, who had been seen as an ally of the country's previous military-installed government.
Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej ordered that National Police Chief Gen. Seriphisut Temiyawej be transferred to an inactive post in the prime minister's office, said deputy police commissioner Pacharawat Wongsuwan.
Pacharawat will serve as acting national police chief.
The decision to replace Seriphisut comes a week after the government fired the chief of the Department of Special Investigations, which is handing a corruption case against deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who returned to Thailand from exile on Thursday.
