International animal health body declares UK, Cyprus free of foot and mouth

The World Organization for Animal Health is declaring Britain and Cyprus free of foot-and-mouth disease, which hit both countries last year.
The decision restores the two countries' disease-free status, which was suspended after outbreaks of the highly contagious livestock ailment. The outbreaks led to the slaughter of hundreds of animals.
Foot-and-mouth does not affect humans, but it can sicken cloven-hoofed animals such as cows and pigs.
The Paris-based veterinary organization gave the countries the all clear last week, and its decision was announced Thursday by the European Union.
