ADB-funded roads to link Mongolia, PRC and Russia

Mongolia will build a US$200 million road network linking its western region with China and Russia, the Asian Development Bank said yesterday.
The Philippines-based lender said it had approved a US$37.6 million grant to build the first section of the Western Regional Road Corridor Development Project.
Japan would provide a US$2 million grant for the 430-kilometer section linking China to Hovd province in western Mongolia. Construction starts next year.
"This major infrastructure project will lead to broad economic growth and reduce geographic isolation for the communities along its route," said Lakshman Athukorala, ADB financial analyst.
The project is also expected to boost tourism traffic in the Altai region, one of the few ecologically unchanged sites left in the world, the bank added.
In late 2010 Mongolia will begin building a 317-kilometer road from Hovd to the Russian border.
The roads will become part of the Asian Highway Network, a 141,000-kilometer road system traversing 32 Asian countries with links to European roadways, the lender said.
