Ten burning questions about the Academy Awards

Ten burning questions about the Academy Awards

Professor Barrywood is never too busy to answer your questions.
Here are the 10 Most Frequently Asked Questions about Oscar Night:
Q. Why do I rarely see Jack Nicholson on the red carpet, even though he is usually in attendance and sitting in the front row?
A. If Hollywood is like high school with money (I can't believe I just quoted Drew Barrymore), then Big Jack is the coolest guy in school. Everybody wants the coolest guy in school at their party, so the people throwing the party make certain accommodations for the cool guy. For instance, Big Jack doesn't have to walk in through the front door. He is allowed to enter through the back, just like those "Goodfellas" at the Copa. The reason Jack likes to arrive at the back door is that he hates TV people and doesn't want to deal with them on the red carpet.
Q. Why do they insist on showing the losers' reactions when the winner is announced?
A. The people in charge of the telecast are hoping that one day someone will actually show how disappointed they really are by throwing a tantrum or pummeling the winner. It would be like "The Jerry Springer Show," only with rich people. The irony of these reaction shots is that if the losing nominees had shown as much acting talent in their movies as they do on camera when they lose the Oscar, they never would have lost in the first place.
Q. Who is the most annoying TV host on the red carpet?
A. It's a tie. They're all annoying.
Q. When is the best time for someone watching at home to go to the bathroom?
A. Best documentary short subject.
Q. What's the difference between the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award?
A. The Thalberg award - named for a producer known as the "Boy Wonder" who died young but left a legacy of great films such as "Camille" and "A Day at the Races" - is given to a "creative producer whose body of work reflects a consistently high quality of motion picture production." Past winners include Dino DeLaurentiis, Clint Eastwood and Cecil B. DeMille.
The Hersholt award - named for a Danish actor who appeared in 140 films and later helped create the Motion Picture Relief Fund - is given to an "individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry." Past winners include Charlton Heston, Paul Newman and Quincy Jones.
Q. Why does the academy give out honorary Oscars?
A. Generally, to make up for past mistakes. These statuettes usually go to people who should have won Oscars, but were somehow overlooked when they were acting for a living. Winners of honorary or lifetime achievement Oscars have included Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant and Groucho Marx.
Q. Are Joel and Ethan Coen the only brothers to ever be nominated in the directing category?
A. No. In 1978, Warren Beatty and Buck Henry were nominated for directing "Heaven Can Wait." It is a little known fact that Beatty and Henry are identical twin brothers who were separated at birth. Buck later had numerous surgical procedures to make him shorter and less attractive so that people could tell him apart from his brother.
Q. Is there a category in which Cate Blanchett was not nominated this year?
A. Yes. Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures. But she would have been nominated had she chosen to write music for a motion picture.
Q. Is it possible for a best picture nominee to be released in early January?
A. No. The release dates of this year's nominees include: "Michael Clayton" (October 5), "No Country for Old Men" (November 9), "Juno" (December 5), "Atonement" (December 7) and "There Will Be Blood" (December 26).
Q. Why is that?
A. Because academy members are human beings and therefore have short memories. They vow to remember the movies released earlier in the year, but they don't. Of course, it's a chicken-and-egg situation. Films released early don't get nominated, so studios don't release Oscar-worthy films early in the year, so academy voters don't nominate films that are released early in the year. Confused? Perhaps you've forgotten the question. You must be an academy member.
