Indian shares end flat; banks offset gains by automakers

Indian shares ended flat Thursday with weak banking stocks offsetting gains by automobile companies.
The Bombay Stock Exchange's 30-share Sensex index ended 0.01 percent lower at 17,825 points.
On the broader National Stock Exchange, the 50-company S&P Nifty index moved up 0.3 percent to 5,285 points.
Banking stocks fell, with State Bank of India down 2.1 percent at 2,039 rupees, followed by ICICI Bank Ltd. down 0.9 percent at 1,104 rupees.
Other losers were real estate firm DLF Ltd. down 2.4 percent at 805 rupees and Reliance Industries Ltd. down 2 percent at 2,537 rupees.
Automakers moved up with Bajaj Auto Ltd. leading the pack rising 3.6 percent to 2,255 rupees, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. up 3.3 percent at 680 rupees. Tata Motors advanced 0.4 percent to 710 rupees and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. was up 0.3 percent at 835 rupees.
Among the other gainers was aluminum company Hindalco Industries Ltd. that climbed 4 percent to 204 rupees.
