Veteran defender Thomas Helveg quits Denmark team

Veteran defender Thomas Helveg retired from international play Thursday, after playing 108 games over 14 years for Denmark.
"I can with a good conscience say that this was the right time for me to stop on the squad," the 36-year-old Helveg said.
Helveg played his first international in 1994, and has represented Udinese, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Norwich and Borussia Moenchengladbach. He now plays for Danish club Odense.
He scored two goals for Denmark, and was captain between 2004-07. Denmark coach Morten Olsen hailed him as "an incredibly important player on the national side."
"His decision is understandable," Olsen said. "He has all good reasons to look back at a fantastic career."
