Taiwan and China repatriate criminals

A fugitive former senior executive of the bankrupt Chung Shing Bank convicted of financial fraud was repatriated from China Thursday, law enforcement officials said. stealing some NT$7.4 billion (US$239 million) worth of illegal loans was repatriated from China Thursday, law enforcement authorities said.
Wang Hsuan-jen, a former general manager of the Kaohsiung-based bank who fled to China last May, was repatriated from Fuzhou City in southern Fujian Province to the Taiwan-held outlying island of Matsu earlier in the day aboard the Chinese ferry "The Strait." Wang played a key role in the scandal involving NT$7.4 billion worth of irregular loans.
The repatriation was carried out under the "Kinmen Agreement" between Red Cross Societies of Taiwan and China in the early 1990s.
After arriving in Matsu, Wang was airlifted aboard a police helicopter from Matsu to Taipei under the escort of Criminal Investigation Bureau officials. The repatriation made Wang the first major Taiwanese economic criminal repatriated from China since the two sides inked the agreement to repatriate hijackers, stowaways and other criminals. Wang was arrested in Shanghai on Jan. 24.
The debt-ridden Chung Shing Bank was auctioned by the government-run Central Deposit Insurance Corp. to the Union Bank of Taiwan in 2005.
Along with Wang Hsuan-jen, 24 other Taiwanese criminals were also repatriated from Fuzhou to Matsu aboard the same ferry Thursday.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's prosecution authorities repatriated a criminal to China Thursday -- Chinese hijacker Wong Zhihua, who was sent from Taipei to Fuzhou via Matsu.
He and several Chinese accomplices hijacked a Chinese airplane destined for Hong Kong in the early 1990s, forcing the pilot to fly to Taiwan. After serving time in Taiwan for the hijacking, Wong and three other Chinese hijackers held a Mainland Affairs Council official hostage and injured the official on Feb. 9, 1999 during a flight from Taipei to the outlying island of Kinmen when they were about to be repatriated to China, landing him more time in prison. Wong recently completed his jail term in Taiwan.
