Pietersen shines in lackluster England batting effort

Kevin Pietersen stood out with a half century as England was dismissed for 131 on the first day of a two-day cricket tour match against an Invitation New Zealand XI on Thursday.
Only four other players reached double figures and Alastair Cook's 19 was the second-highest score, after Pietersen's 50, as the tourists were hurried out in 40.1 overs.
New Zealand seam bowler Iain O'Brien took 4-34 and recuperating international Mark Gillespie returned 3-62.
The Invitation side was 177-4 at stumps. Test opener Matthew Bell made 40 and his New Zealand teammate Jamie How made 65.
The match is England's last warmup ahead of the first match of a three-test series starting next week at Hamilton.
