Interim coach Sixto Vizuete to head Ecuador's national team

Sixto Vizuete has been named permanent coach of Ecuador, after leading the team on an interim basis.
Vizuete, who took over when Luis Fernando Suarez resigned in November, will try to lead Ecuador to its third straight World Cup appearance in South Africa in 2010, the country's soccer federation said.
Vizuete was given the job after the federation's first choice Hernan Dario Gomez _ the Colombian coach who led Ecuador in the 2002 World Cup _ turned down an offer to return last week.
Suarez quit after the team lost three consecutive matches in South America's qualifiers, losing 1-0 to Venezuela, 5-0 to Brazil, and 5-1 to Paraguay.
He coached Ecuador to the final 16 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Vizuete, 47, made his name coaching Ecuador's under-18 team to the gold medal at the Pan American Games in July, but has never coached or served as assistant coach for a national or first-division team.
