EU to spend euro55 million on initiatives to make internet safe for children

The European Union said Wednesday it will spend euro55 million (US$83 million) between 2009 and 2013 to protect children from illegal content on the Internet and online bullying.
"As more and more European children and adolescents use online technologies at home or at school, they, their parents, and their teachers need to be informed about the opportunities and risks they face," said European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
He said the European Commission would fund projects aimed at creating a safer Internet for children, as well as studies into how children use new technologies and what effect they have on them and their online conduct.
"The need for action is increasing in response to new uses of the technology," said Viviane Reding, the EU Information Technology commissioner.
