Afghan bomb kills two NATO soldiers
A roadside bomb blast struck NATO soldiers patrolling in eastern Afghanistan, killing two of the troops and wounding one other.
The latest casualties brings the number of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan to 21 so far this year, according to an AP tally of figures from ISAF and the U.S.-led coalition.
In 2007, insurgency-related violence killed more than 6,500 people, including 222 foreign troops. Last year was the deadliest yet since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001.
Prison sentence
A South Korean court sentenced the country's former tax chief to three and a half years in prison yesterday for taking bribes from a junior official seeking a promotion, a court spokesman said.
The Busan District Court also ruled that Jeon Goon-pyo, a former head of the National Tax Service, must pay 79.4 million won (US$84,000), which will be reverted to state coffers.
The sum is the same amount he received in kickbacks from Jung Sang-gon, then a regional tax chief in the country's second largest city of Busan, between July 2006 and January 2007, said court spokesman Park Ju-young.
Smoking ban
Mexican lawmakers voted on Tuesday to ban smoking in bars, restaurants and other enclosed public spaces across the country, which counts some 65,000 cigarette-related deaths each year.
Joining a string of newly smoke-free countries from Britain to Uruguay, Mexico will slap fines on establishments that breach the ban, and could subject recalcitrant smokers caught illicitly puffing to up to 36 hours in jail.
Laborious hanging
A Papua New Guinea woman gave birth prematurely as she struggled to free herself from a hangman's noose after villagers lynched her and her husband believing they were involved in sorcery, local media reported.
For the next two weeks the couple hid with friends in other villages, but eventually decided to seek medical help at the Mount Hagen Hospital.
Hospital staff said the couple's baby girl and her mother were doing fine after they were admitted last Saturday.
