EU ends investigation into funding of Irish, Flemish public broadcasters

European Union regulators Wednesday ended probes into public funding for the state broadcasters in Ireland and Dutch-speaking parts of Belgium after receiving commitments that future spending would comply with EU subsidy rules.
Private competitors had triggered the EU investigations with complaints that state aid to the broadcasters went beyond what was needed to support their public service function.
In a statement, the European Commission said Belgian authorities had agreed on new rules that define the public service remit of the VRT network and would set up an independent review body. The Irish government made similar commitments for RTE and TG4.
The EU has closed similar inquiries into broadcasters in Germany, Spain, France and Italy and ordered Dutch public broadcaster NOS to pay back part of its subsidy.
