US Senate advances legislation to cut off money for Iraq war

U.S. Senate Republicans have agreed to advance a bill that would cut off money for Iraq because they say it will give them a chance to tout progress made in the war.
Senate Repulican Leader Mitch McConnell said debate "would give us a chance to talk about the extraordinary progress that's been made in Iraq over the last six months not only on the military side, but also with civilian reconciliation beginning to finally take hold in the country."
The Senate voted 70-24 to begin debating the bill. A final vote was expected later this week or next week.
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he welcomes the debate.
"In Iraq, a civil war rages," he declared.
"Americans need to start taking care of Americans," he later added. "We cannot spend a half billion dollars every day in Iraq."
