Striker Edison Mendez quits Ecuador squad due to personal problems and fatigue

Edison Mendez announced Tuesday that he is quitting the Ecuadorean national squad because of personal problems and fatigue.
The 28-year-old PSV Eindhoven striker, who has two years left on his contract at the Dutch club, made the surprise announcement in a telephone interview to a local radio station from the Netherlands.
"My decision was to definitively leave the team because of the many problems I've had," Mendez said without elaborating. "The truth is that the physical fatigue of being in Europe was very hard on me.
"It's been difficult for me, but in life one has to take a step aside so that others can take one's place."
Mendez, who has played for PSV since 2006, has been a key member of Ecuador's squad, which will play Argentina in June in a 2010 World Cup qualifying match.
Ecuador first played at the World Cup in 2002 in South Korea and Japan. It advanced to the second round in 2006 in Germany.
