Group attends meeting held by U.N. agency

A non-governmental group of more than 30 female experts and academics from Taiwan is in New York to attend the meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women under the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which opened Monday.
The group, composed of female specialists from private groups and foundations will take part in a series of workshops beginning Tuesday.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the conference that the U.N. will launch a seven-year campaign to help abused women across the world and called on all nations, nongovernmental organizations and private groups to join the movement.
One-third of women around the globe have endured during their lifetimes physical abuse and maltreatment, or are victims of sexual or other kinds of violence at the hands of their husbands or male partners, statistics show. On average, one out of every five women around the world are raped or victims of attempted rapes during their lifetimes.
Taiwan's women rights groups have taken part in meetings organized by the commission in recent years and have set up effective communications channels with many NGO organizations.
