England winger Stewart Downing signs new five-year contract with Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing has signed a new five-year contract with the club.
Downing had agreed to the contract, which runs to 2013, two weeks ago and finally signed it Tuesday.
Downing's agent, Ian Elliott, said last month he was pulling out of talks with Middlesbrough after more than a year of negotiations, but the England international changed his mind after the club signed Brazilian striker Afonso Alves.
The 23-year-old Downing had been linked with a move to Tottenham for more than a year and Boro turned down an approach from the London club.
Elliott then said last month that his client would honor his contract to 2010 before leaving on a free transfer.
Downing joined Middlesbrough as a schoolboy in 2001. He has played 178 games, scoring 16 goals, including six this season to be the club's leading scorer.
He has played 16 times for England.
