Iraq names Iraqi soccer coach to replace Norwegian at helm of national team

Iraq's soccer association has named an Iraqi to replace the national team's Norwegian coach after a disappointing performance in the World Cup qualifications, an official said Monday.
Adnan Hamad, is currently in charge of Jordan's Al Faisaly club, was chosen to replace Egil Olsen criticism over a 1-1 draw with China earlier this month.
Hamad will be on loan from Al Faisaly in order to begin working with the Iraqi team on March 13, according to Tariq Ahmed, deputy general-secretary of the Iraqi soccer association.
Iraq is due to meet Qatar in Doha in March. 26 in the third round of World Cup qualifications.
"Our hearts are with Hamad who showed that he loves his country. The decision to ask Hamad to coach the team came to end the criticism after the 1-1 draw with China. We thank Hamad for his patriotic stance," Ahmed said.
He said Hamad's contract with Al Faisaly ends in April.
Olsen, who helped Norway qualify for the 1994 and '98 World Cups, agreed in September to lead the Iraqi team for three years but he has been under pressure
He replaced Brazilian coach Jorvan Vieira, who stepped down after leading the team to a surprising Asian Cup victory over Saudi Arabia last year.
Iraq has not played a game in its war-torn country in years. Because of the kidnapping and killing of athletes in various sports, the squad trains abroad, mostly in Gulf nations such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
