Fireworks show and other activities to greet advent of new year

A fireworks show over the top of Taipei 101, one of the world's tallest occupied skyscrapers, is expected to be the spotlight of activities slated to take place in several parts of Taiwan Monday to celebrate the advent of 2008.
Though the temperature is to drop to around 7 degrees Celsius at midnight -- the lowest this winter, Taipei city government officials said they still expect a huge turnout at the fireworks show and a concert in an adjacent area.
Starting from 7 p.m., the Taipei city government will implement an eight-hour traffic control system in the vicinity of Taipei City Hall and the Hsinyi District.
Several hotels in the capital city also will organize parties offering a good view of the fireworks show.
In eastern Taiwan, the Taitung county government will organize two events -- a New Year's Eve countdown celebration at the National Museum of Prehistory and a party at Taimali township, in which a 10-meter airship will fly around the party.
An official of the Taitung county government said free shuttle bus services between the two events will be provided.
In central Taiwan, an official of the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration said that in addition to a New Year's Eve countdown, four local temples will organize a religious activity to welcome the arrival of 2008 with 108 bells at midnight.
Also in central Taiwan, the Cingshui service area on the No. 3 National Freeway will hold a concert at 10:30 p.m. followed by another activity at 11:15 p.m. in which 10,000 people will hold fireworks to celebrate the coming of the New Year.
