Chen apologetic about 'irrational woman' remark

The Presidential Office said Monday President Chen Shui-bian has no intention of insulting women by comparing the opposition Kuomintang to an irrational woman a day earlier.
In an interview with a radio station Sunday, Chen said the KMT had been acting like an irrational and unreasonable woman for the past one month in dealing with the voting procedure in the upcoing legislative elections and national referendums.
Chen made the remark after the largest opposition party agreed to adopt the one-stage format under which voters will receive election and referendum ballots from tables 50 centimeters apart and cast them into different boxes.
Counties and cities under opposition control had vowed to adopt a two-stage system under which voters will collect election ballots -- one for their favorite legislative candidates and the other for favorite parties -- and cast them into separate boxes. They can then move on to vote for the referendums if they bother to.
The Chen administration has blasted the two-stage format as illegal and threatened to punish defiant election officials who refuse to enforce the one-stage format.
Chen's“irrational woman”remark drew sharp criticism from KMT Legislator Kuo Su-chun who said the president apparently had no respect for the nation's women.
The Presidential Office said Chen has assigned great importance to promoting women's rights as evidenced by his appointment of eight female Cabinet ministers in 2000 and other policies in later years.
Still, the Presidential Office said Chen is willing to apologize if his remark caused any discomfort for the nation's women.
