TAIEX closes year with a surge of 109 points

Taiwan stock market put up a bullish performance on the last day of 2007 Monday, with the weighted index, the market's chief barometer, rising 109.33 points, or 1.3 percent, to close at 8,506.28.
The bourse opened at 8,450.32 and fluctuated between 8,506.28 and 8,414.79 during trading. A total of 3.6 billion shares changed hands on a market turnover of NT$83.08 billion (US$2.56 billion).
Seven of the eight major stock categories gained ground, with foodstuff issues moving up the most at 3.8 percent, followed by textile stocks at 2.6 percent, construction issues at 1.7 percent, and paper and pulp issues at 1.6 percent. Machinery and electronics shares increased their values by 1.5 percent, plastics and chemicals shares by 0.9 percent, and banking and financial shares by 0.1 percent.
Only cement stocks lost ground, depreciating 0.4 percent. Gainers outnumbered losers more than 1,000 to 842, with 473 stocks remaining unchanged.
