Slovakia edged Denmark 4-3 and Kazakhstan downed Switzerland 3-1 for their first victories at the Under-20 World Ice Hockey Championship on Sunday.
Slovakia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second period with goals from Ivan Rohac, Matej Cesik and Erik Caladi, and then held off Denmark's rally in the third.
In Liberec, Yakov Vorobyov scored twice to give Kazakhstan a 2-0 lead after the second period. Switzerland answered with a goal by Yannick Webber 13:49 into the third, but Yevgeni Rymarev secured the win with 53 seconds left.
Slovakia earned its first three points in Group A, while Denmark remains without a point. Kazakhstan also has three points in Group B, while Switzerland has one. None of the four teams can advance to the quarterfinals and will play in the relegation round.
Sweden tops Group A with nine points, three more than three-time defending champion Canada and host Czech Republic. In Group B, the United States leads on nine points, three points clear of Russia, while Finland is third with five.
The winner of each group qualifies directly for the semifinals, while the second and third teams play a quarterfinal round.
Sweden faces the Czech Republic and Canada takes on Denmark in the final preliminary stage matches in Group A on Monday, while the United States plays Finland and Russia faces Switzerland in Group B.
