Earthquake rocks southern Taiwan
A magnitude 4 earthquake hit the southern county of Chiayi at 1: 47 a.m. yesterday, the Central Weather Bureau said later the same day.
No major damage was reported, according to the bureau.
The earthquake's epicenter was 18.6 kilometers southeast of Chiayi City, at a depth of 13.2 km, the bureau said.
Ketamine crackdown
Customs officials have seized over 68 kilograms of ketamine from incoming express parcels at the Taoyuan International Airport during the past five months, the Taipei Customs Office said in a news release yesterday.
The office indicated that during the August-December period, officials with its Onsite Clearance Division confiscated a total of 68.72 kilograms of ketamine and 169 grams of heroin from 24 express parcels.
The Taipei Customs Office pledged in the news release that its officials will step up efforts to crack down on drug trafficking via air freight, especially during the festive season when illicit drugs are in great demand.
Ketamine, a fast-acting dissociative anesthetic used on both animals and humans, can produce hallucinogenic effects and impair perceptions. It can also elicit an out-of-body or near-death experience and render the user comatose.
Invincible deterrent
Strong and well-trained amphibious and special operations forces could form an invincible national defense and effective deterrence against invasion, officials from the Ministry of National Defense said yesterday.
The officials said the amphibious and army special operations forces completed two important drills late last week, honing their combat prowess.
In modern warfare, amphibious and special operations forces are no less important than advanced jet fighters or missiles, MND officials said.
In a joint drill conducted by members of the Navy, Air force and Marines, the military - with a combination of aircraft and landing craft - honed their skills of launching attacks from the sea.
Kinmen Marathon
The 2008 Kinmen Marathon, the first international marathon to be held on Kinmen, will take place January 5, with some 10,000 runners taking part.
The event, sponsored by the Kinmen County government, will be divided into four categories: the 42.2-kilometer marathon, the 21.1-km half marathon, the 10-km race and the 3-km leisure run
More than 2,200 runners, including athletes from China's Fujian province and six accomplished runners from Kenya, Zimbabwe and Russia, will compete in the men's and women's marathon groups.
