The mercury was expected to plummet beginning yesterday night as the winter's first cold front sweeps across Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau reported yesterday.
The onslaught of the northern Chinese cold front is forecast to hit last night and will remain for three days before leaving January 3, with lows reaching 7 degrees Celsius in open, coastal areas of central and northeastern parts of Taiwan, CWB forecasters warned.
The forecasters urged the public to watch out for sudden temperature changes and farmers and fishermen to take protective measures to care for their crops.
The arrival of the cold front reduced temperatures to 12.6 degrees Celsius in the northern coastal township of Tamshui Sunday morning. During the daytime, temperatures in northern Taiwan are forecast to reach around 18 degrees Celsius, and 20 degrees Celsius for central and southern Taiwan.
Lows for central and northern regions of the country could remain under 10 degrees Celsius until January 3, the forecasters said.
