Phoenix beat Jets in Australian A-League soccer

Michael Ferrante and Kristian Rees scored goals early in the second half Sunday to lead the Wellington Phoenix to a 3-2 win over the Newcastle Jets in Australian A-League soccer.
Jets striker Scott Tunbridge gave the Newcastle crowd of 15,107 hope of a draw with his first goal of the season in the 81st minute, but Wellington hung on for its fifth win.
"The most important thing for us was to come out and get the three points," said Stan Smeltz, who scored Wellington's first goal in the 16th minute. "We got off to a good start and kept them under pressure for most of the game."
In the other match Sunday, Brazilian import Reinaldo and Robbie Kruse scored first-half goals as Queensland beat the Perth Glory 4-1. The win moved the Roar into a first-place tie with the Central Coast Mariners, who close out the 18th round Monday with a match against Melbourne.
On Friday, Sydney FC beat Adelaide United 3-1. Midfielder Kristian Sarkies gave Adelaide the lead in the 20th minute before Brendon Santalab equalized for Sydney in the 44th minute.
Veteran attacker Steve Corica made it 2-1 in the 54th minute after driving a low shot past Adelaide goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic from just inside the penalty area. Wingback Rob Middleby bundled the ball over from almost on the goal line to make it 3-1 in the 66th minute.
It was Sydney's fifth win since ex-Adelaide coach John Kosmina took over from Branko Culina nine games ago.
"We need another good result," Kosmina said of his team's playoff chances. "We've got three games to get it, but we don't want to wait three games to get it. You want to win as may games as you can and we're starting to get a bit more ruthless in that regard."
