A clash between police and hundreds of rioters in the southern city of Karachi left three people dead and 17 wounded Saturday, police said.
The violence erupted in the Chakiwara neighborhood, where rioters had looted food stores in recent days. Police were investigating who opened fire, police officer Fayyaz Khan said.
Rangers were given the authority to shoot at rioters to quell the violence, and some civilians said the paramilitary troops fired at them without provocation.
"I was standing on the side of a road waiting to cross over to go to a shop to buy food when passing Rangers' vehicles opened fire," said Mohammed Hussain, 50, who was shot in the leg.
Najib Ullah, 13, said he was among 15 boys playing cricket in the street when he was hit by a Ranger bullet. He said he saw other boys falling to the ground, apparently after being shot.
