New diplomatic stage set despite hardships, MOFA says

Despite the fact that 2007 was a hard and arduous year for Taiwan, its efforts to expand and maintain its diplomatic ties with other countries in addition to its attempts to join international organizations have created a grand new stage, Minister of the Foreign Affairs James Huang (黃志芳) said yesterday.
In his opening remarks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' year-end press conference, Huang said that despite China's expeditious rise over the years which has empowered it with political and economic clout to use every conceivable means to repress Taiwan in the global community, his ministry has striven to have Taiwan join the World Health Organization and the United Nations under the name Taiwan as well as to hold three summits with Taiwan's allies in Central America, Africa, and the South Pacific.
Taiwanese people should feel proud of such achievements, he went on, saying that Taiwan has managed to consolidate its democracy further despite its difficult diplomatic situation and without the efforts leading to war with China.
Looking back on the numerous diplomatic battles against China's ruthless oppression in 2007, it is clear that Taiwan should take new initiatives from the strategic high ground in order to fight for the international status it deserves, Huang said.
"If we do not make a step forward, we will end up being squashed," he added.
