UN condemns Bhutto assassination as "reprehensible act" that threatens peace and security

The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Thursday to condemn the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, urging all nations to help bring those responsible for "this reprehensible act" to justice.
Meeting in emergency session, the council described Bhutto's killing as a threat to international peace and security and issued a statement that "calls on all Pakistanis to exercise restraint and maintain stability in the country."
The council also said that nations "need to combat by all means" within U.N. rules and international law any such "threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts."
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon he was "shocked and outraged" by the killing of Bhutto.
"This represents an assault on stability in Pakistan and its democratic processes," Ban said. "I strongly condemn this heinous crime and call for the perpetrators to be brought to justice as soon as possible."
