LAFA (拉芳舞團), a recently-established dance troupe founded by two prominent Taiwanese dancers, Sheu Fang-Yi (許芳宜) and Bulareyaung Pagarlava (布拉瑞揚), will tour Yilan (宜蘭), Taipei (台北) and Taichung (台中) in January performing their latest production, 37 Arts. Sheu, 36, is a Yilan native who has previously been the leading dancer at the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan (台灣雲門舞集) and Martha Graham Dance Company in New York. 37 Arts is a compilation of the dance works she and Bulareyaung choreographed during an artist-in-residence program at the Baryshnikov Art Center (BAC), New York in September,.Bulareyaung, an aboriginal dancer and choreographer, also danced with Cloud Gate as a principal dancer. Beginning to create dance pieces at the age of 20, Bulareyaung’s works have often been praised by Taiwanese dance icon Lin Hwai-min (林懷民). He and Sheu has been a couple for 14 years. The name of the show, 37 Arts comes from the building complex where Sheu rehearsed during her 8-week program at BAC. The dynamic setting and movements in the work chronicle the delights and hard-knocks Sheu experienced in the city of New York. Tickets are NT$250 – NT$1700 and available through Arts Ticket.

A RPG Theatre Piece Inspired by Water Margin 林奕華 水滸傳 2008亞洲巡迴 at National Theater at 7:30 p.m. on January 4(Fri) and 5(Sat) and 2:30 p.m. on 5(Sat) and 6(Sun)Edward Lam, the Enfant Terrible among the theatre directors of Hong Kong and Taiwan, exhilarates the audiences with his adapted plays in which the languages used in the theatre and pop culture are blended. What is Man?, produced in 2006, has been an enormous success and leaves much for the audiences and critics to reflect upon.Edward Lam will lead his troupe in performing What is Man? throughout the Southeast Asia, making Taipei his first stop. Episodes of the play have been revised to let the audiences have a new vision for the nine varieties of males.
