Liu to miss some Golden League meets to focus on Olympics

China's top track medal hope for the Summer Olympics will not compete in some European competitions next year to focus on preparations for the Beijing Games, his coach was quoted as saying by a state-run newspaper Thursday.
Liu Xiang, the gold medalist in the 110-meter hurdles at the Athens Games, will miss Golden League series meets in June and July, his coach Sun Haiping was quoted as saying in the China Daily.
"The Golden League Oslo stop will clash with other competitions on our schedule and the Rome and Paris stops will be so close to the Olympic Games, so we have decided not to take part," Sun was quoted as saying.
Liu's gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics was the first for an Asian in track and field, and the Chinese public's expectations on him to repeat are growing as the Beijing Games get closer.
"The gold medal at the Beijing Olympics is what we will strive for with every effort," Sun said.
Sun, in Beijing to oversee the 24-year-old Liu's winter training, said March's world indoor championships in Valencia, Spain, will be Liu's first major competition next year.
Liu will start his outdoor season in Osaka, followed by a test event at the Olympic track venue in Beijing in May, Sun said.
