Celtic keeps lead in Scottish league, Rangers still 2 points behind

Celtic kept its lead in the Scottish Premier League on Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Dundee United.
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Stephen McManus scored for Celtic to ensure it stayed two points ahead of rival Rangers.
Paul Hartley set up both goals _ crossing for Venegoor of Hesselink to head into goal in the 69th minute and providing the free kick that McManus scored from in the 74th.
Celtic leads with 40 points, with Rangers on 38 after it beat Motherwell 3-1 behind goals from Daniel Cousin and Kris Boyd and an own-goal from Chris Porter. Paul Quinn had leveled to 1-1 in the 65th for Motherwell, which is third in the league with 32 points.
Stephen McGinn scored to give St. Mirren a 1-0 win over Hearts, which slipped slipped one place to 10th in the 12-team league.
Also Wednesday, it was: Falkirk 1, Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0; Gretna 1, Aberdeen 1; and Kilmarnock 2, Hibernian 1.
