Apple Daily news stories most detailed: survey

The Apple Daily newspaper produces the most detailed news reports and has the greatest influence on society compared with other Chinese-language newspapers in Taiwan, according to the results of a survey released Tuesday.
The survey also shows that the United Daily News has the most in-depth news stories, while the Taipei-based China Times has the most widespread coverage of global events.
The survey, now in its fourth year, was conducted by Shih Hsin University's College of Journalism and Communications among 1,100 people aged between 15 and 64 in 25 cities and counties via face-to-face interviews. The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
The survey -- which also asked the interviewees' preferences over local magazines, radio stations, television stations and Web portals in Taiwan -- is part of the college's efforts to gauge the public's evaluations of the media’s quality and their social influence, said James Hsiung, dean of the college.
Hsiung said respondents are more often exposed to TV than to newspapers and the Internet and that TV news channels are the biggest source of news for the respondents.
However, he described the objectivity of TV news as doubtful on grounds TV stations often compete to obtain news as fast as possible. The survey shows that the respondents regard the United Daily News, Apple Daily, and the Liberty Times, in that order, as the top three newspapers in Taiwan.
The respondents believe that Apple Daily, -- followed by the Liberty Times and the United Daily -- has the most detailed and news stories, the survey shows.
The top three newspapers in terms of in-depth news articles are the United Daily News, the China Times and the Liberty Times, in that order, according to the survey results.
In terms of global perspective, the China Times tops the survey, while the United Daily and the Liberty Times are second and third, respectively, according to the survey.
In addition, the top three most-watched TV stations are Formosa TV, Sanlih E-Television, and China Television, the survey shows. Meanwhile, the respondents said they also watch the HBO movie channel, the Da-Ai Television channel, the CTI news channel, and the Sanlih news channel.
The Taipei-based Broadcasting Corporation of China, the UFO Network, and the Police Radio Station are the most popular radio stations among the respondents.
The most widely read magazines among the respondents are Next Magazine, the China Times Weekly, Business Weekly Magazine, and Common Wealth Magazine, in that order, the survey shows.
In terms of using Web portals, the respondents prefer the Taiwan version of Yahoo to that of MSN and Google, as well as PChome Online, in that order, the survey indicates.
