Formosa Petrochemical shuts gas unit

Formosa Petrochemical Corp., Taiwan's second-biggest fuel supplier, shut a gasoline-producing unit at Mailiao on Dec. 19 because of a mechanical fault.
The closure of the 84,000 barrel-a-day plant, known as a residual fluid catalytic cracker, may last as long as a week, Lin Keh Yen, a director at the refiner, said by telephone in Taipei yesterday.
The unit converts heavier refined products such as residual fuel into higher-valued products including gasoline. Mailiao- based Formosa Petrochemical operates two such facilities. The refiner is tapping into inventories following the closure.
"We shut it because we don't want to take any risk," Lin said. "Gasoline production is down a bit but it don't affect our shipments."
The company restarted the other RFCC December 7 after closing it for about 10 days to fix an equipment leakage.
Formosa Petrochemical, with a capacity to refine 540,000 barrels of crude a day, and state-owned rival CPC Corp. are Taiwan's only oil refiners.
