Stosur withdraws from Australian Open
MELBOURNE, Australia
Australian Samantha Stosur has withdrawn from January's Australian Open because she is not fit enough to play.
Stosur, 23, the top-ranked Australian in world tennis, said she only resumed training three weeks ago after battling viral illnesses throughout 2007, and that she was not ready for the Australian Open - the first grand slam tournament of the year - and other local events.
Stosur, ranked No. 46 on the WTA Tour, was hospitalized in Florida in September with viral meningitis after earlier missing a Fed Cup event and tournaments in the United States because of an unrelated virus.
Threat against Collina
ROME, Italy
Former referee Pierluigi Collina has been given police protection after receiving threatening letters, Italian media reported on Sunday.
The ANSA news agency said that authorities in Tuscany had decided to issue Collina, well recognized internationally for his bald pate and piercing stare, with an escort after the 47-year-old was sent credible soccer-related threats to his home.
Collina, who officiated at the 2002 World Cup final, is now chief of the referees of Serie A and Serie B, Italy's top two professional tiers.
Boise State upset
HONOLULU, Hawaii
Ben Hartman kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give East Carolina a 41-38 win over No. 24 Boise State in the Hawaii Bowl on Sunday night.
Chris Johnson set an NCAA bowl record with 408 all-purpose yards for the Pirates (8-5), who won their first postseason game since the 2000 Galleryfurniture.com Bowl.
The Broncos (10-3), making their sixth straight bowl appearance, almost repeated their last-minute magic from a year ago when they stunned Oklahoma in overtime in the Fiesta Bowl to finish 13-0.
But this time, it was the Broncos who fell a little short without any trick plays and an ailing Ian Johnson.
