Ties between Taiwan and Malawi solid and firm: ambassador

Bilateral relations between Malawi and Taiwan remain firm and solid, Malawian Ambassador to Taiwan Thengo Maloya reasserted Monday.
Maloya made the reaffirmation during a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang during which Maloya denied any change in bilateral ties as reported by a Malawian newspaper.
The Malawian newspaper said that a delegation of Malawian officials is ready to visit China, which may put Taiwan's diplomatic relations with Malawi in jeopardy. Malawian officials reportedly are slated to depart for Beijing on Dec. 24 and will sign a memorandum of understanding there to pave the way for the establishment of formal diplomatic ties between the two sides.
Huang met with Maloya for the second time since the report came to light last Saturday to gain better understanding of the relations between Taiwan and Malawi, said Phoebe Yeh, acting spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Yeh added that Deputy Foreign Minister Yang Tzu-pao has left for Malawi to cement bilateral ties.
According to Yeh, Maloya assured Huang that nothing negative has occurred in Taiwan-Malawi diplomatic relations.
Yeh added that Malawian officials said to visit Beijing have yet to make the trip.
Despite Malawi's reassurance, Yeh said her agency remains vigilant and is closely watching the developments.
