Report: Carlos Ischia to coach Boca Juniors

Carlos Ischia is widely expected to be the next coach of Boca Juniors.
Ischia _ who was an assistant to former Boca coach Carlos Bianchi _ has been tapped for the job, Clarin and La Nacion reported Sunday. The two Argentine newspapers cited unnamed sources close to club management, while Boca officials had no immediate comment.
Ischia, 51, played for Argentina. As a coach, he has led Velez, Gimnasia of La Plata and Rosario Central.
Miguel Angel Russo led Boca to this year's Copa Libertadores title but he resigned Thursday only days after his team lost 4-2 to AC Milan in the Club World Cup final in Tokyo.
Russo reportedly rejected a demand by Boca team chief Pedro Pompilio to fire his two assistants.
Ischia was on a list of possible candidates that included former Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta, reports said.
Bianchi, who was Boca's most successful coach from 1998 to 2004, was also on the list. Under Bianchi, Boca won four first division titles, three Copa Libertadores titles and two Intercontinental trophies.
While Boca won the Libertadores this year under Russo, beating Brazil's Gremio, the Buenos Aires club finished a disappointing third in the domestic Apertura season, lagging behind unheralded clubs Lanus and Tigre.
Argentina soccer great Diego Maradona, who is an influential adviser to Boca team executives, had signaled his opposition to Bianchi or any of his top aides becoming coach.
"I don't like Ischia as coach," Maradona said when asked about the reports. "I don't believe he would be the ideal choice for the team."
Government news agency Telam reported that Ischia and Pompilio had talked about the job _ by phone and face to face _but no announcement was expected until after the Christmas holiday.
